Research on Space-time Evolution Characteristics of FDI in Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone

ABSTRACT

It has positive significance for regional economy to reasonably raise the level of using FDI in Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone. From aspects of accounting for proportion of Jiangxi province's FDI, spatial distribution differences of FDI in different cities and counties, proportion of lakeside cities and counties' FDI, concentration of FDI in Nanchang, this paper discusses the space-time evolution characteristics of FDI in Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone. The conclusions are as follows: Firstly, FDI in the region has climbed rapidly and its proportion in Jiangxi province tended to rise since the new century. Secondly, Nanchang has presented one pole concentration trend in using FDI in the region. Thirdly, proportion of lakeside cities and counties' FDI is stable in general.

INTRODUCTION

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is an important factor to promote the development of regional economy; to launch the research on Space-time evolution characteristics of FDI can dynamically and quantitatively grasp the circumstance of using FDI in a region, deeply analyze location selection characteristics and change mechanisms of FDI; and then, it could help to optimize the use of space resource and establish reasonable investment policies.

Since 1960s, many scholars have launched researches on regional distribution and flow mechanism of FDI, and have produced many representative results such as Hymer's monopoly advantage theory, Vernon's product life cycle theory, and Dunning's eclectic theory of international production which has been developed in

the era of globalization [1-3]. Although the general location theory of FDI has not been formed in academic circle, location conditions, labor costs, the level of economic development, economic extroversion, market size, infrastructure, and other influence factors which could affect the distribution of FDI have been valued generally in the researches of many scholars. For this, Liu Zuoli et al (2009) have given a comprehensive introduction in the review of the research on foreign direct investment location in China [4].

RESEARCH OBJECT

In this study, Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone is selected as the research object; data of research is from 2000 to 2010. Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone locates in south bank of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze river and the northern part of Jiangxi Province; the region covers the whole administrative regions of Nanchang, Jingdezhen and Yingtan, and part of the administrative regions of Jiujiang, Xinyu, Fuzhou, Yichun, Shangrao and Jian, as well as all of the Poyang Lake; area of Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone is 51200 square kilometers.

The region is the engine to promote Jiangxi province to grow up in central China; however, as an important storage lake of the Yangtze River, the Poyang Lake, which is called "Kidney of The Mainland", is also facing a higher pressure on resources and the environment in the rapid development of economy. It has strong typicalness and policy reference significance to research on space-time evolution characteristics of FDI in the region.

ANALYSIS OF THE SPACE-TIME EVOLUTION CHARACTERISTICS

Proportion of FDI in Jiangxi Province

Since the new century, Jiangxi province seizes the opportunity of industrial gradient transfer and China's accession to World Trade Organization to improve the level of opening up actively; its level of using FDI increases year by year. From 2000 to 2010, the amount of FDI in Jiangxi province rose from 227.24 million dollars to 5100.84 million dollars. Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone has good foundation of development and superior location condition in Jiangxi province; the amount of FDI in this region increases year by year. From 2000 to 2004, its proportion of FDI in Jiangxi province undulated between 57.8% to 70.4%; after that, except in 2009, this number has been increased yearly; it heavily rose from 57.8% in 2004 to 74.5% in 2010. The figure 1 shows Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone has become the important region and the growth engine of Jiangxi province in using FDI.
