The Application of Optical Fiber Communication in Power System

Optical fiber communication has advantages of high electric insulation performance and strong anti-interference ability, thus, improving the quality of electric power communication. And it has become an important technology in electric power system and the main mode of information transportation

1. The Introduction of Optical Fiber Communication

Optical fiber communication uses modulated light to transmit information. Because optical fiber communication has excellent transmittability and can ensure the security of information, it is becoming more and more significant in passing on information. It mainly works as follows: useful information is modulated to the carrier wave after it is sent from the input to the transmitter, afterwards modulated carrier wave is transmitted to the distant receiver, and then the receiver demodulates out the original message.

Power system communication network is one of the largest and well developed communication networks in our country. Electric power communication bears the main business of voice, data, broad, IP and such conventional telecom businesses. Electric power system consists of electricity production, transmission, distribution, and consumption. High voltage transmission lines are constructed all around to achieve cross-regional and long-distance power transmission so as to meet the demand of urban and rural citizens in production and living. To some degree, High, medium and low voltage transmission lines are the network infrastructure which covers the country most widely.

3. The Application of Optical Fiber Communication in Power System

Recently, with the continuous development of electric power communication network, the technology is changing from the analog communication to digital communication. Stable, reliable and efficient, optical fiber communication can improve the service quality of power system. In this case, optical fiber communication is playing an important role in this field.

3.1Strengths

Compared with other materials and technology, optical fiber communication applied to electric power system has obvious technical advantages.

3.1.1 Large Capacity of Communication.

Make comparisons with the copper cable and wire, the transmission bandwidth of optical fiber is much larger. And the capacity of optical fiber is dozens of times larger than that of the microwave communication. So the efficiency of information transmission can be improved a lot.

3.1.2 Low Dissipation and Long Relay Distance

In electric power communication system, the dissipation of quartz optical fiber is lower than any other transmission media. From the perspective of relay distance, the fiber communication system made up of quartz optical fiber is much longer than others.

3.1.3 Strong Resistance to Electromagnetic Interference.

Optical fiber made of quartz has good insulation and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference. In actual life, the installed optical fiber always keeps parallel with high voltage transmission lines and combines with electrical conductor to form composite fiber optic cable. Quartz optical fiber can avoid the interference between lines to ensure the fidelity of signals. At the same time, the quartz is a kind of insulating medium. Therefore, in the quartz optical fiber, alternating electromagnetic waves will not produce voltage fluctuations or any other noise that may disturb the transmission signals.

3.1.4 Small Diameter and Perfect Flexibility.

The diameter of the optical fiber is very small. When it is used as a transmission channel, the difficulty in laying the underground pipelines is solved and the cost in construction is cut down. Moreover, the characteristics of fiber optic such as light weight and perfect flexibility reduce many troubles in the construction of transmission lines.

3.1.5 Reliable Security Performance

Information is shared through transmission channels. Considering the demand of information transmission in power system, higher accuracy is needed. And using optical fiber communication technology can realize that each signal is transmitted by a specific wavelength, thus, greatly increasing the accuracy of the transmission.

3.1.6 Rich Resources of Raw Material.

The raw material resources of optical fiber are rich and the production cost is low. So it is not difficult to produce optical fiber.

3.2 Kinds

In the electric power communication system, the optical fibers that are most commonly used are optical fiber composite ground wire, optical fiber composite phase line and messenger cable, etc.

3.2.1 Optical Fiber Composite Ground Wire.
